“Mom said to not go through the puddle, so I did.”
“Mom said don’t eat the grass, so I did.”
“So we ran the baseball field.”
Sometimes we listen to mommy, and still have fun (not often, though).

Noel wants to know what this white stuff is. 8:00 March 25, 2013. First major storm of the winter came in spring.
What is that I smell? There is something different down here by the water. FIRE! I smell a fire. Mommy says that I should stay away from fire. I like the smell though. When Mommy was a little girl her house burned down, so she does not like the smell at all. She worries at the slightest burning smell.
Wait! We don’t have a fire pit by the water. That was the Horse Shoe game pit. Someone burned stuff in the game pit. And there is also glass in there; someone smashed a bottle. This looks pretty dangerous. Why don’t people take care of things? Especially in a shared place like the private neighborhood waterfront. This makes us all sad.
We will stay away from the smokey smell and the glass Mom. But can we go into the river now? (Mom Note: Which Sofie did immediately following, without asking, but I was so glad she left the pit alone so I let it go.)

The dogs and I like to walk on the floating pier and I tell them to “go fishing,” and they run and sniff all the interesting smells around the boats. But there isn’t much to sniff right now. Only one boat appears to be brave enough to be in the water (it is still pretty cold – they are calling for flurries tonight). Boats around here are mostly wrapped in fancy white stuff and on trailers in people’s yards during the winter. But, they will start coming back to the pier pretty soon since the daffodils and crocus are blooming.
The pier is on ‘Breezy Point,’ at the end of my peninsula, and, yes, it is very breezy. The girls are running into the wind, which they love. Talk about mischief! When the wind blows Louise can get into a lot of trouble following the scents on the wind. I love the smell of spring in the air, even if it is below freezing.
Do you get into more mischief in the wind?

It is starting to be nice enough to open the windows. With the bathroom window open, Nine, the Mancat, decided it was the purrfect place for his afternoon siesta. K8 caught him enjoying the moment. It get’s harder and harder to resist taking a break and going out to see the buds on the trees and the birds busy with their nesting. Ever day now the mailbox (which got bashed by some kid’s with a baseball bat last fall, so it does not close) has been full of nesting material. Today, when I came back from my walk (yes WALK, today was the first time I did my full 1 miler with the girls) there was a fully complete bird’s nest in the box. How sad, because I had to remove it and set it into the bush next to the box so that the mail carrier could deliver the mail. I tried to close the broken door to the box so they will build elsewhere, but I am not to successful. This is so exciting. I love baby birds. Good thing that my cats only see them through the windows.
Does spring air make you sleepy? Does it make you want to go out and build something?
SPRING IS SPRINGING!!!!!

Louise and Sofie were waiting in the yard for spring yesterday. Maybe it was because the clocks changed here in the United States for Day Light savings time.
Something caught there attention beyond the fence because they were both transfixed for a long time. Maybe it was spring coming over the hill?
When daylight savings time changes for spring, it changes human’s mood for the better; the animals, I don’t think they really care.
How does Day Light Savings time effect you?

We are trying to determine where to place the National Wildlife Federation‘s Certified Wildlife Habitat Plaque we received last winter for the property. The dogs are very proud to be part of the environmentally sensitive landscaping and help by digging strategic holes in certain critical areas and especially keeping the gardens clear of moles, voles, and bunnies (you know I am kidding about the proud part, right). The first grapes of the year are starting to bud, and if you look carefully you can see tiny tiny little grapes on the vine. Sofie and Lulu especially like to chew on the grape stalks (yum… tasty). We just got 2 new rain barrels to try and hold back some of the erosion that is going on from years of drought. We are losing so much top soil and everything is just turning to sand (which Sofie really likes, because to her, it is one big sand box). I love the yard in spring. This morning we sat and watched some new orange and brown butterflies (I need to get the book out to see what kind they are) suckling on the azaleas.

And the ducks are back quacking their heads off and walking all over the pool cover. They make Lulu and Sofie crazy because the pool area is fenced off and the dogs can’t run at the ducks to chase them away.
Spring has come to the Mid-Atlantic.

Nine and Stella are very taken with the activity outside the kitchen window. All my animals seem to love this window, maybe because it is a nice sill to lie on. The dogs like to look out the windows too, but Sofie really can’t see over the ledge. I love when we can open the windows but we get this fine green coating of pollen over everything in and outside the house. There use to be a big maple shading that window but we had to take her down last year because of ‘borers’ and lightening damage. Now the shade garden on that side had to be moved and that side has become a sun garden. Because all my cats live indoors only, the world outside the windows are something magical. Nine constantly tries to run out with the dogs, so we are having to be very careful that he does not go galloping out in all the dog excitement. The cats sit by any door the dogs are outside of and watch. Windows and doors to the world. I know there is a metaphor for some great life lesson here, but it is just not coming to mind at the moment.
