12.8.12 Happy HanukkahPaws To All

holiday2012

Sofie & her faux family

We live in a multi-religious household, so we get to celebrate festivals all season long (goody!).  Today is the start of the Festival of Lights, called Hanukkah (you may see it spelled many different ways because it is not English).  The word Hanukkah means ‘dedication.’ The name reminds us that this holiday commemorates the re-dedication of the holy Temple in Jerusalem after the Jewish victory over the Syrian-Greeks in 165 B.C.E.  The temple was defiled and the sacred fire, that was supposed to burn all the time, was out.  There was only one day of sacred oil left and people were really upset because it would take 8 days to sanctify new oil.  Miraculously, the one day oil supply lasted a full 8 days until the temple was able to be properly rededicated.  Cool huh!  (Note that the holiday commemorates the miracle of the oil, not the military victory: the Jewish people do not glorify war.) And that is why the celebration of Hanukkah is for 8 days and people eat fried things.

There are 4 special things we do here at the zoo for this celebration:  we light candles for 8 nights (away from all the kitties because we really worry about fire and tails), we play a really fun game called Dreidel (it’s a top with Hebrew letters on it and Mommy gives us doggie and kitty treats she calls,  ‘Gelt’ when we win), we eat fried stuff (especially potato pancakes called, ‘Latke,’ which we wait all year for because she only makes them once), and ‘Hanny,’  the Hanukkah Fairy, brings special little gifts for us every night (we think this is because a lot of other animals we know get Xmas presents later this month and she does not want us to feel left out).

“Nes Gadol Haya Sham: A Great Miracle Happened There” is what we say.  And that is true in our house.  Every day we find miracles in our life.  We hope you do too.

12.6.12 Thankful Thursday

Thankful-Thursday-Logo-2-150x150If it is Thursday, then it must be Thankful Thursday Blog Hop day.  I am hopping this from PepsiSmartDog’s Smart Dog Blog. Pepsi seems like a well educated dog, so go check out the site.

Last week was Thanksgiving holiday in the US, and I know that I said thank you to all my readers and for all the wonderful things that I am thankful for, but the truth is, every day that I wake up I am thankful.  I do not think that I ever stop feeling blessed by this wonderful life that I have.  My great family, the animals that surround me, my great neighborhood, my friends, my health, my job…. I am just one very lucky person.  But since this is an animal blog, I think that I need to look at it from their side.  So let me ask some of them:

2012-05-23_15-07-44_791Louise:  I am thankful that I have a family that loves me and protects me; a Mom who understands that I am afraid of a lot of things and doesn’t make me deal with the world any more than I really can.  I am also really thankful for being able to get up on the den couch.

2012-09-01_07-39-13_906
Sofie: I am thankful for my sister Louise, and for my cats (that I love to chase), all my toys, and especially for my lovey, Beaver.

2012-11-09_13-17-00_55Noel:  I am thankful for the nice warm spot that Mom leaves in her bed in the morning, so that I can crawl in it and sleep the rest of the day.

2012-10-17_13-06-38_346Stella:  I am thankful for a bed to hide under.

What are you thankful for today?

12.4.12 Tasty Tuesday: Peanut Butter Pumpkin Cookies

We are joining the Tasty Tuesday Blog Hop thanks to Hey, It’s Jet Here.  Please hop over to visit Jet and tell him DogDaz sent you.  Jet, JJ, and their human make some tasty stuff over there in Casa Jet.

tasty-tuesdays1

So… for our first Tasty Tuesday, we want to share the Peanut Butter Pumpkin Cookies that we made for Sofie’s birthday this year.  We found the recipe somewhere on the internet (can’t find the link, sorry) and then improvised the rest.  They were yummy good, and since Sofie doesn’t like cookies very much I needed to make sure they were peanut buttery and extra special.

Ingredients for about 25 cookies

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Whisk together the flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon in a bowl. Add water as needed to help make the dough workable, but the dough should be dry and stiff. Roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick roll. Cut into 1/2-inch pieces.
  3. Bake in preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes.

I cut them into stars.  The girls thought they were dog yummy!
