4.18.13 Thankful Thursday: Children and Helpers
Today I want to take a moment to say thank you to the helpers in my life and to remember the dead and injured from the terrible events of the Boston Marathon Bombing on Monday.
In the wake of the bombing, the internet, and even the evening news her in the USA, has reflected on a quote by the children’s advocate and showman, Fred Rogers. He said,
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”
That statement is so true and something we should all teach our children (and learn ourselves). Look for the helpers. That is important to do even when you are not scared. And remember that animals can be those helpers, as well as humans.
You may not know that Fred Rogers was also a positive voice for pets. In 1998, he wrote a book called “When A Pet Dies,” to help children deal with the sadness around losing their first pet. I like his view on children and pets and it is clear from his writings that pets are definitely among the positive helpers for children’s growth.
“Pets often serve as a trustworthy confidant for a child’s feelings of loneliness, sadness or fear. When adults and friends don’t seem to have time to play, a child can usually count on a pet to be a partner in a game. When a child is sad, a pet can usually be counted on to “listen.” When a child has been scolded and feels bad, a pet will still wag its tail nonjudgmentally and remind the child that he or she is still loved.” – Fred Rogers
I am thankful for people like Fred Rogers, who add a voice of calmness during stressful times, and to all the helpers, 2 and 4 legged, that I have encountered in my scary moments.
What are you thankful for today?

4.16.13 Cats & Dogs Can Be Friends – But Litter Can Kill
A High School friend of mine (via Facebook) contacted me yesterday with an interesting question. She has 8 cats (bless her little rescuing heart) and is considering getting a small dog. She has never had a dog and was worried about several things, but especially about the dog eating cat litter. With 9 pans in her house, I could understand the concern. What I learned in answering her question was that kitty litter could actually be toxic to small dogs (I did not know that). Check out this information on eHOW. I always have had a concern about dog’s eating cat poop, but I did not think about them eating the actual litter. It makes sense that clumping litter could really block a small dogs system, and it contains chemicals that could cause all kinds of gastro distress.
In our house, we have 2 uncovered pans in the the laundry room accessible only through a cat door or by a human, and a third side entry pan by my office, which the dogs can not get into. We try for one pan per cat.
Cats and dogs can make the best of house mates. Notice in the photo above, Mr.Nine last night taking over Louise’s bed. You can see 60 pound Lulu in the corner trying to lie on Sofie’s little dog bed because she did not want to tangle with the 10 pound ManCat sleeping in the middle of her’s. Around here cats tend to have the upper paw. BOL BOL (Bark Out Loud)
Post script: My thoughts and prayers are in Boston today. When will senseless killing end.

Tuesday’s Puppy Pesto Gardener
Puppy Starts Homemade Pesto Business
Pesto is great. You can put it on pasta, you can put it on sandwiches, you can just dip Italian bread in it.
A love of pesto is what’d driving Humphrey the mastiff puppy to put all his savings into a new business veture: Presto Pesto.
“Humphrey has planted a large basil garden in the backyard,” said the dog’s business partner Tony Maggliotti. “He plans to use his own, homegrown basil and to locally source parmesan cheese. But the secret ingredient? He’ll be using pistachios instead of pine nuts. It’s delicious.”
Humphrey will ship his first batch of Presto Pesto in June.

Hackers Target WordPress Sites: Change Your Passwords Now
REBLOGGED by DogDaz: Posted by Katy Ryan Schamberger on April 13, 2013 ·
Although it’s always a good idea to regularly change your passwords, it’s an especially smart idea in light of news that WordPress is under a significant attack. The brute-force dictionary-based attack is an attempt to find passwords for the “admin” accounts that WordPress creates by default, according to TechCrunch.
HostGator, which, along with CloudFlare, first broke news of the attack, believes that about 90,000 IP addresses are currently involved.
“As for the scope of the attack, [CloudFlare CEO Matthew] Prince says that CloudFlare saw attacks on virtually every WordPress site on its network.”
How To Protect Your WordPress Site From Attack
There are several things you can do to help protect your WordPress site from the attack—and we recommend doing them immediately.
Change Your Password
Even if you’ve recently changed your password, change it again—and, please, make it difficult. Use random letters, numbers and symbols to create a combination that’s hard to guess or hack.
Change Your User Name
This attack is specifically targeting accounts with the “admin” user name, so if you haven’t changed this default setting, do it now. Change it to your name, your company’s name—anything other than admin will add an extra layer of protection to your site.
Install A Plugin
Want to add an additional layer of security to your site or blog? Consider installing a WordPress plugin that limits the number of login attempts from the same IP address or network. This isn’t a foolproof method—as TechCrunch points out, many hackers have a large number of IP addresses and/or networks at their disposal. Still, when it comes to security, you can never have too much—and if a plugin gives you some additional peace of mind, we say go for it.
We recommend taking these steps as soon as you can. This initial attack may be stopped at any time, but a scary prediction from the CloudFlare team indicates that this may only be a precursor to a larger event.
“One of the concerns of an attack like this is that the attacker is using a relatively weak botnet of home PCs in order to build a much larger botnet of beefy servers in preparation for a future attack. These larger machines can cause much more damage in DDoS attacks because the servers have large network connections and are capable of generating significant amounts of traffic.”
We’ll be sure to keep you updated on the attack. In the meantime, go change your password and user name…now!
