Black and White Sunday: Running Free

Other than our own fenced yard, there are not many places that we can run off leash. There are always so many people around and other dogs that Mom is afraid that we, or she, will get into trouble. Mom takes us down to the very end of the peninsula, we live between 2 creeks off the Magothy River, where she feels comfortable with our antics. If there are no people or animals around then she lets us go because we are locked in on 2 sides by water and the 3rd side by her. This is our favorite free run place because we can chase ducks and geese and cranes and cormorant and still not get in trouble. Once Sofie jumped into the water and Mom had to go in after her, but that doesn’t happen much. Sofie is too short and heavy to pull herself up the bulkhead and Louise hates water. Mom doesn’t let Charles run free here though because she worries that (1) he would drown if he fell in, (2) the Osprey would pick him up quickly, and (3) we would roll him down the grass and throw him in the water.

Running free is great fun and we wish there were more safe places to do it. Mom used to take us to the dog park but there were so many aggressive people and poorly trained dogs that we found it more stressful than fun. We just want to run around with Mom for a little while that’s all.

Do you have a free run space that you like? Where is it?

Have a wonderful Black and White Sunday.

Black and White Sunday: Expansion

I find it amazing how a medium size dog becomes a St. Bernard when it is night time.

Wordless Wednesday: You Never FEED ME!

The poor starving overweight little man.

Surely no one ever feeds him.

We just don’t know where those extra 4 lbs came from.

Have a wonderful Wednesday.

Black and White Sunday: Are You Serious?

Louise is a very serious dog. She always has this thoughtful face on. But once or twice a day Louise the puppy comes out. She finds a squeaky toy and goes crazy for about 10 minutes. Then it is back to being serious Lulu.  Are you mostly silly or serious?

Have a wonderful Black and White Sunday.

Wordless Wednesday: Autumn Changes

Fall has arrived, The pool is closed and the foliage is turning brown. The days are getting shorter and the weather is perfectly perfect. The Autumnal Equinox is upon us.

As the season’s change, I wonder how the environmental cues affect domestic animals. Since we live in an environment with artificial light, and heat, and cooling, how much of the seasonal changes really affect humans or pets? The dogs are absolutely friskier in the fall and the spring. I don’t know why, but they are. Sofie’s nose changes color between winter and summer (she has what is called Snow Nose- you can read about it here) and her coat gets darker too. Other than that, I don’t think they’re affected much.

How does the change of seasons affect you and your furbabies?

Black and White Sunday: Sorry, Charlie

Charles, the Mugwump, wants my dinner. Though all begging is futile when it comes to my food, he has the cutest look when he really really wants me to give it to him. Sorry, Charlie, dogs only eat in their bowls.

Wordless Wednesday: Sniff Your Family

How fun to spend the day with Aunt B. This is the first time Charles met Aunt B and he quickly decided she is a comfy part of the pack.

I wonder sometimes if family smells similar. Does Charles know that Aunt B belongs to Mommy (we’re sisters)? Do you think that human family’s smell similar? There has been research done that says that humans can tell who their biological family is – but can a dog tell the family of their humans? I think someone needs to find this out. What do you think?

Monday Mischief: Working on the Chain Gang

Charles loves Louise. If she sniffs something, he sniffs it. If she pees on it, he has to pee on it. He follows her so closely sometimes that it bothers me, because he fits perfectly under her torso which freaks her out, and because he doesn’t move when she is peeing, which grosses me out.

Something very interesting must have come down the center of the road last night and since the dogs’ smellers are 25X more powerful than mine, they know what it is, but I sure don’t. Sofie is usually my street sniffer and mostly it is right in the center. Sometimes I have to pull her to the side so she doesn’t get run over by a car. The only thing I can think of is that it must be the foxes who walk down the center ridge (I don’t know why) and maybe they pee as they go.

With 3 dogs, it is very easy to run out of hands or feel like you are on a medieval rack when everyone wants to move along (in different directions usually) and you need to stop and pick something up (after getting a bag out of the pouch, unfolding it, and bending down… you get the picture) My answer is a CHAIN GANG (but a happy one not a bunch of prisoners). Since Mr. Charles wants to keep going and nothing stops him, I loop him onto Sofie’s lead. Then Sofie holds him back (since he is a little afraid of her) and I loop her onto Louise, who in most cases will stay when I tell her to. Louise is the heaviest and strongest of the 3 so I can keep control down the line.

Sniff and pee – Pee and sniff – What kind of mischief did you get into today?

DogDaz remembers and salutes the victims and survivors of the September 11th Terror Attack

I visited Ground Zero at the World Trade Center 9/11 Memorial while it was under construction. I am standing by the giant man-made waterfall with the names of the victims around the outside. It is very humbling and very eerie. Let the world practice peace and make war no more. – Lorian
