4.12.13 Follow Up Friday: Sum.. Sum.. Summer Time

Go Home, Lil' Baby

Go Home, Lil’ Baby

Spring/Summer hit the Mid-Atlantic big time this week.  So the girls and I were down by the water a lot.  The week started out with all this very terrible squirrel activity, and my little murderers monsters sweet doggies were not aware of the havoc they reeked for their tired sensitive animal loving Mom.  I find it interesting that we brought squirrel baby  #2 to the park to find a safer nest and ever since then Sofie has refused to walk to the park with me.  Maybe she does not want to bump into the baby she almost killed.  (I am only just now thinking of that).

I haven’t been blogging about Sofie’s difficulties this week, but I have posted them on Facebook.  Do you follow DOGDAZCATS2 on Facebook?  It is nice to also have that avenue to actually have conversations with other pet lovers outside of just the comments in a daily blog post.  Please do come visit our page and LIKE us so that we know who you are and we can LIKE you back.  A ‘Like’ in Facebook, is a ‘FOLLOW’ in WordPress.

dup0080402ask_prvSofie has refused to walk down the block to the park.  She started this on Monday.  She gets half way down the block and sits down (little stubborn Sheltie thing that she is) and wants to go home.  It has gotten hotter and hotter each day, but I don’t think that is it because if it was that bad outside, I would not have gone for a walk.  We even walked with Mojo (her buddy).  But no go!

The interesting thing is she will take the similar distance walk in the other direction, to the river. Go figure?  Is it the baby squirrel sending psychic messages to turn back?

I started her on 50 mg of Benadryl (antihistimine) just in case it is allergies (1 mg for every pound of dog the vet says).

Thank you Readers for liking the games we play down by the water, especially when we found Lucy, our neighbor’s Jack Russell Terrier at the dock hiding in a boat.

I am sorry to report that my stupid state of Maryland was not able to agree on the bill that would have saved many Bully Breed and Bully-Mix owners from having to possibly give up their pets because of Breed Discrimination in the state. It was all because of one sentence that the Senate and House differed on.  I am just appalled and ashamed at the things that lawmakers sometimes do.

My step-daughter lost her best friend’s 18-year-old brother on Wednesday in a car crash with 3 other boys.  The cause – excessive speeding.  Please remember that nothing is worth driving that fast for.  Speed kills so many people, animals, and ruins lives forever.  Talk to your kids, today!  And talk to yourself too!

That’s it for the week. Thanks for playing along with us.

4.11.13 Thankful Thursday: Directly Into Summer

Thank you ‘Oh Great Powers That Be’ for the flowers.  Mom says she would like a few days of spring weather, if you could arrange it, instead of straight into summer temperatures, but we are thankful for what we can get.

4.10.13 Wordless Wednesday: Finding Lucy

IMG_20130408_120100_552

Mom took us down to the water, like usual, to ‘go fishing.’

IMG_20130408_120154_193

We love to run along the docks and look for strange and smelly things.

IMG_20130408_120045_276

Today, we found Lucy (she lives down the block).  We think she is strange and smelly (and she sure does run and jump a lot).  We think she was hiding on a boat with her Dad because she came out of no where.

 Happy Wednesday.

4.9.13 They Both Survived

Last Thursday, I noticed the dogs going crazy at the fence line.  Right on the other side was a baby squirrel about 6″ long foraging for food.  I put the monsters dogs inside and proceeded to go pick up the baby, whose nest was about 10 stories up in the pines (Note: I am terrible at weight, height, and age guessing).  I came back around and put the baby back on the truck of the tree with his nest and I encouraged him to go home and stay high up.  (Yes, I absolutely understand he does not speak human and had no idea what I was talking about.)

Friday afternoon, as I feared, I see the dogs attacking something under the pines.  The poor thing, it did not listen and Louise had it in her mouth. Once I was able to call the dogs off. I picked up the little thing and it appeared that it’s back left leg was broken.  Oh my!  We got a cat carrier, filled it with leaves, water, a carrot and a grape, and made the little guy comfortable because there was nothing we could do in the late afternoon on a Friday.  Tomorrow, I would take it to the Wildlife Sanctuary or a Vet.

Baby Squirrel #1

Go Home, Lil' Baby

Go Home, Lil’ Baby

Saturday morning, off I went to the (please donate they really need it) Davidsonville Wildlife Sanctuary, about 20 minutes from my house.  We are so lucky there is such a place in the area that takes wild animals to be rehabilitated or to live out their lives.  I had never been there before but the kids have.  So lil’ squirrel and I went and he now had a new home to heal (until the big bad Baltimore Gas & Electric Company take the rest of her land – go to the link above and read her letter trying to save her family farm).

So… I get back home and let the dogs out back and you know what happens…. I see Sofie, down by the pool, with another baby in her mouth.  This one was lucky because it was soft mouthed sheltie Sofie and not the killer hound/lab, Louise.  I think this one hurt it’s front paw, but otherwise it seemed OK.

Since Baby #2 was able to climb and not in that bad shape, I took him/her to the park.  I found an area with a couple of nests way up in the trees in hope that maybe some other family will adopt it.  I don’t know much about squirrels, but I do hope that is possible.  (Please don’t tell me if it is not, because I want to believe that a few years from now, walking in the park, Baby #2 will look down at me from the trees and wave with it’s all better paw.)

Are you Ok? Baby #2

I feel bad for the Mommy squirrel, but I really really really pray that she tells her kids to not play in our yard.

As you can imaging, the dogs now are on the prowl for anything moving in the leaves.

Sure seems that baby squirrels are early and spring is late.  That was definitely enough excitement for me for awhile.
