Many times I wonder what the animals are really doing while I am gone. I have thought about installing one of those spy cameras, like the kind you use to check up on your human child’s babysitter to see if they are really taking them out to the park or letting them sit in front of the ‘idiot box’ TV all day. But, then I realize that might be, well, a little obsessive. Basically, I think that Louise sleeps for most of the time. Sofie, on the other hand, may try to sleep, but the cats tend to set her up to get in trouble. For example, the cats get on my desk and throw stick pens down to Sofie. Of course Sofie can not help herself and chews through the plastic until it is unrecognizable. This kind of trouble is not only dangerous for Sofie but is messy. One time, about 23 years ago, I had left Nikki dog (who was about 3) and the then kittens, Alice and Gertrude, alone all day while I was at work. I had obviously lost my mind because I left a full try of just baked brownies on the counter to cool and went to work outside the house all day. Well, when I got home, not only were the brownies and the glass baking dish on the floor, but there was one very crazy puppy running circles around the house. Now I know the only way that a little Cocker Spaniel got that heavy baking dish was with the creative pushing of it off the counter by 2 little kitties. It was not funny at the time. On second thought, maybe I should install that camera…..

Since Mom is away, Louise and I have tried to take some pictures so that we can blog about our time without her. I tried to take them with my cell phone and then Louise took one too. We hope you like our dog attempts at photography. We know we are not as good as Laurie Bartolo, expert dog photographer extraordinaire, but maybe she will consider us for her next amateur photographer show. I am not sure we dogs really get the concept of pictures (or blogs for that matter) but I know that Mommy likes to snap a lot of them of us. I am sure that when Mom returns she will choose me as the new DogDaz photographer for all events, don’t you think? Louise can carry the equipment bag (woof woof woof woof – this is dog for “Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Tail Off”). – Sofie Bear

Louise: “Sofie, now remember Mommy told us she will always come back for us no matter how far away she is.”
Sofie: “But, Lu…. (whine, whine, whine)… it is really hot out and I want to go swimming in the river and I want to take a long walk and I want Mommy to rub my tummy!…(whine, whine, whine)
Louise: “Mommy said that we should count the minutes until her return, so let’s start now” (in her most big sister voice.)
Sofie: “What’s a minute?”

This is Sofie Bear. Louise was being silly yesterday and tried to walk on the ceiling because she wanted to see what it would be like for the whole world to be upside down because Mommy is someplace called ‘down under.’ But I always look at the world from down under. I am a roll over on my back dog and look up at the sky from down here all the time. She does that sometimes but I do it several times a day. I love to be upside down. Sometimes if people see me they rub my tummy. Lulu only rolls for Mommy. When Mommy and Lulu are doing their little love fest thing, that is when I come running over and bite Lulu on the back leg. Hey, that is my Mommy too and I want her to rub my belly!

Mommy left us again on another business trip and this time she said she is going to the land of the Kangas and the Roos (wherever that may be). She told us that though it is summer here and very very hot, it will be winter there. How is that possible? Worse of all. she has left Noel, the Christmas Cat, in charge of the zoo. But why Mommy? Why? Noel is not the oldest, The Muffin Man is; she is not the meanest, Miss Constance Kitty is; she is not a dog, so why should she be in charge? We are confused. Mommy did tell Sofie and I to keep the blog going the best we can while she is 25 hours away (she got there with the help of a big silver bird). She also said that when it is today here, it is tomorrow there. Wow, we are really confused. So Blog friends, we hope that we can keep you amused until Mommy returns; we may need to bring back some of our favorite already blogged blogs. I am sure you won’t mind. Keep and eye out for Mommies physical return in a few weeks, when she will be able to once again blog without our assistance. (We hate when she goes away!!!!!) – Lulu Belle

The dogs love when we come back from a walk and they can stretch out on the office floor and on their dog bed and take a nap. It is funny because I will turn around and Louise will be fast asleep on the dog bed. Then I turn around again and Sofie has taken over the bed. I didn’t really think about it until this picture but maybe they are to big for the dog bed. Come to think of it they are usually half on the floor. Lil’ Sofie does look half off the mat here, doesn’t she?. Their bed is a mess because shortly before they fell asleep they had some bone tucked underneath one of the sheets and were pulling the bed apart to free the bone. (Silly dogs – I have been trying to teach them how to do ‘hospital corners,’ but they keep reminding me that they do not have thumbs to fold sheets properly.) Sofie actually moves around a lot in her nap cycle. She will start to sleep on the dog bed, then get up and lie right under my chair (so that I can not roll), then over by the door, then right outside the office door…. Louise pretty much stays put on the bed or floor, but occasionally she will lie under my desk with her head on the rollers of my chair. There have been a few times, when I just can’t keep my eyes open during the day, I have lied on the dog bed with them and caught a nap myself for a few minutes. Napping is an art that I just don’t have. Another lesson that I really need to learn from the dogs.

Lounging on the deck is such a relaxing experience. K8 took some great shots of Sofie, just being Sofie. Looking pretty, checking out what is around her, and showing that she is not very interested in lying quietly. Sofie is one of those dogs that gets bored. You have to always have something for her to do, or she will create something, like dig a whole to China (which is our very North American term for digging through the earth to the other side, which for us, is China we think – but is it really?) Since we were out of power for so many days, I went to the only open supermarket and picked up a few new dog toys. Each dog got a supposedly indistructable stuffed toy (Lulu got a fish and Sofie a turtle). Turtle lasted about 1 hr before her stuffing was everywhere (she is pink, so I figured it was a girl turtle). Fish actually held for about 2 days (he is yellow). He is half stuffed now (and of course I did a ‘squeeker-ectomy’ once opened by the girls). Then I also bought them each a new ‘Bo-Bo,’ I only see Lulu’s so I assume Sofie’s is lying empty of stuffing somewhere. It kept them busy for a little while and to me that is wonderful. We still walk in the 107 degree F heat (about 42 Celsius) and then they sleep it off for awhile too. Ah, the life of a dog in suburbia. Wish I had time to be bored with you Sofie!

I like to fill the dogs marrow bones with peanut butter in the morning to keep them busy while I am having breakfast. I keep the peanut butter in the refrigerator, so that it is harder, and knife it into both sides of the bone. This keeps them busy for about 10 minutes if I am lucky. I like to watch the creative ways they try to get the peanut butter out of the holes. I have tried many other things in the bones: expensive Kong filler stuff (blah! and not much for the price), Cheese Wiz (to many chemicals and sugar and salt – I realized that I wouldn’t eat it, so why would I give it to them). whipped cream (it disappeared into the air), processed cheese pressed in to the hole (really hard to do and harder for them to get out (actually almost impossible for Sofie)). In the end, there is nothing that replaces good old peanut butter. They sure do enjoy those peanut butter bones.

While I was gone, V bought the dogs a giant green Carrot toy. They just love it. We are always looking for fun toys that last more than one day and are hard for two dogs to rip apart in a matter of seconds. I think it is so cute when they both hold on to the same toy and run along side each other. This has become the toy of the moment for sure. It is here in my office now and Sofie is sleeping on it. Earlier today Louise kept bringing it to me and squeeking it: Pull it Mommy, Pull it! New toys are always a novelty. I never know which toys are going to really make the dogs happy, but when I find one, maybe I should run out and get another one immediately because of the inevitable end – stuffing everywhere. I wonder where V bought it?

Post Script: Just found fluff all over the floor of the living room – you know what that means – now it is a flat carrot.
