DogDaz Zoo: Loving Fearful Dogs – Socializing Waylon (Part 2)

DogDaz Zoo: Loving Fearful Dogs – Socializing Waylon (Part 2)

DogDaz friend, Jeanne Bellis, is doing outstanding work taking hard to place dogs and helping them socialize and reintegrate to new homes. Here is Part 2 of the Socializing Waylon series. Waylon, a catahoula-cattledog mix, was in a bind. His owner, a US Marine, was being deployed overseas and Waylon, a dog aggressive, fearful mess, had only one hope – Bellis Boot Camp. Follow Jeanne as she socializes Waylon with her pack. It’s amazing what patience, smarts, good training and love can do. This is part 2 of the series as Waylon learns how to make friends with other dogs.

DogDaz Zoo: Happy 9th Charles

Happy 9th birthday, little man. Though you’ve only been at the Zoo for 7 months, you have turned our world around. You have made us little dog lovers in a big dog world. Even the cats like you sometimes (especially Noel). Thank you for adopting us and letting us be your final forever home. I guess you had to bite your way through many homes (at least 5) until you found your perfect place with us. Here’s to the next 9.

We love you Mr. Charles, the Mugwump, Little.

Wordless Wednesday: We Slept Through It!

Yesterday was 4th of July and you know what that means – FIREWORKS! Not only was it going to be a stressful evening but when Mom was walking us to get us tired before dinner THUNDER rolled in. Mom was not sure how we were going to do this evening with all the rumbles from Mother Nature and the crackers used to honor our Forefathers (a double whammy). It didn’t start well because Louise didn’t want to eat all her dinner because of the thunder (though Sofie decided it was OK to finish it for her before Mom caught her).

Mom played nice smooth jazz music for us during the storm. It always helps distract us from the noise. She thinks it is more soothing than classical (which can get quite raucous). And after the storm, we played our evening games. She tried to take us out to potty before it got dark, but as soon as we got in the yard we heard pop pop pop and ran back inside.

Once it got dark, everyone was watching TV and it drowned out most of the crackers and, as you can see from the pictures, Louise and Sofie were able to snooze right through the ‘1812 Overture.’ I was a little concerned but managed to see myself through until I could go ‘night night’ in my downstairs kennel, with the curtain down, and the music up, and some extra treats.

We hope your celebration was quiet and peaceful and full of treats. – Charles, the Mugwump

DogDaz Zoo: Celebration!

Fireworks are legal to buy and shoot off here in Maryland. People start celebrating at least a week before the 4th of July and for a week after. It is crazy noisy for hours every night after dark. Mom makes us stay inside with the curtains closed and the music on. We don’t even want to go pee before bed because every time we step out in the yard we hear another ‘boom boom!’ Why do human’s think this noise is fun? We just don’t get it.

To balance the evening noise, Mom gets us something special (we think it is deer antlers or bully sticks this year). This will keep us busy after dark. And we also take a nice long walk before dark so we are tired. All these things help us through the evening celebration.

Have a wonderful super duper day and stay safe at night. Hope you get a special treat too!

Wordless Wednesday: Thunk

Since I have been living in the den while recuperating, my piano can be accessed from the couch-bed or the temporary table that I have set up. So the piano has now become a stepping stone for Charles and the cats to see out the window. I kept hearing “thunk thunk thunk” on the keys (it’s electric so at least I can keep the sound off).

At first, I thought it was a cat trying to play with the blinds (which they love to do). Mini has been sleeping on a blanket I put there for her for awhile, but then I caught Charlie sleeping on the keyboard the other day. I have even seen Louise step on it to look out.

I am not sure that is good for the keys?

DogDaz Zoo: Bacon LOVE’s Noel

We can’t believe that Miss Noel, the Christmas Cat, is a star. Bacon interviewed her on June 8th at PIGLOVE What an honor to be on Bacon’s blog.

We’ll let Bacon tell you ABOUT himself.

“I’m a miniature pot bellied pig.  My mom/dad adopted me when I was a mere three weeks old and I’m just a tad bit spoiled.  This blog is about ‘my misadventures’ in life here at the Hotel Thompson with my mom/dad and other friends listed below.  We try our best to keep the humans on their toes.  Someone has to and trust me – it’s a hard job with my mom and dad.  They are always getting into trouble!  My main goal on my blog is to bring a smile to your face.  If I did that, I did my job well.”

Dear Readers – If Mom had her foot on straight she would not have thought that the interview was on June 18, when Bacon told her it was going to be on June 8th, and then miss posting on my big day. Mom hopes you all go visit Bacon and crew and let them know that DogDaz sent you and read my interview – since every cat needs their 15 minutes of fame and that was mine. – Gee Thanks, Mom – Noel, the Christmas Cat

Wordless Wednesday: Beauty As Happiness

Sometimes I am amazed at Sofie’s coat. It swirls and twists in amazing ways. She is a visually beautiful dog. But dogs don’t know how beautiful they are. They have no sense of vanity or visual beauty, those are complex human emotions. If Sofie was a human she would probably have mats in her hair and be unkempt if left to her own devices. I probably would be constantly putting her long blond hair in a braid or pigtails. Dogs don’t get caught up in the visual differences of their species. With no sense of visual beauty, what they see is valued on a different scale than ours. They lack the aesthetic sense of things. How different it would be to not know visual beauty. To experience a sunrise only as an astrological event, not as the deep oranges and reds that bring a new day. To look at a painting that moves you, and not feel moved. Ok, so now I have made myself sad.

But some define Beauty as Happiness. And I know that my dogs experience happy. So then, by this definition, they must be experiencing beauty. I like that. Beauty in the deepest sense. Beauty felt. I know this was a lot of words for a Wordless Wednesday, but do you think dogs experience beauty?
