DogDaz Zoo: July 4th – Keeping Your Dogs Calm

We hope that you have a wonderful holiday. Remember that many animals (and humans) are afraid of fireworks, so keep everyone indoors and safe.

PREPARE YOUR DOG FOR LOUD NOISES!

The 4th and 5th of July are the busiest days of the year for animal shelters and emergency vet clinics as frantic animals break in or out of houses and yards. Early preparation for the Fourth can save you and your pet a lot of grief. Here are some articles to help you prepare your dog.

Wordless Wednesday: We Slept Through It!

Yesterday was 4th of July and you know what that means – FIREWORKS! Not only was it going to be a stressful evening but when Mom was walking us to get us tired before dinner THUNDER rolled in. Mom was not sure how we were going to do this evening with all the rumbles from Mother Nature and the crackers used to honor our Forefathers (a double whammy). It didn’t start well because Louise didn’t want to eat all her dinner because of the thunder (though Sofie decided it was OK to finish it for her before Mom caught her).

Mom played nice smooth jazz music for us during the storm. It always helps distract us from the noise. She thinks it is more soothing than classical (which can get quite raucous). And after the storm, we played our evening games. She tried to take us out to potty before it got dark, but as soon as we got in the yard we heard pop pop pop and ran back inside.

Once it got dark, everyone was watching TV and it drowned out most of the crackers and, as you can see from the pictures, Louise and Sofie were able to snooze right through the ‘1812 Overture.’ I was a little concerned but managed to see myself through until I could go ‘night night’ in my downstairs kennel, with the curtain down, and the music up, and some extra treats.

We hope your celebration was quiet and peaceful and full of treats. – Charles, the Mugwump

Wordless Wednesday: Always Waiting

Waiting

All we dogs ever seem to do is wait for things to happen.

Wait for Mommy to take us for a walk.

Wait for someone to play with us.

Wait for a treat.

Wait for a squirrel to run by,

Wait for the mailperson to pass.

Wait for dinner.

Wait for Mommy to take this silly shirt off me (even though I scratch myself raw).

What are you waiting for?

Happy Wednesday!

Wordless Wednesday: Enough Boomers Already!

thunder

Mommy thinks that this stretchy shirt thingy will make me feel less crazy when the big boomers start outside the window. She says that there are elves in the sky rolling balls into pins and when they hit them it makes those big smashing sounds.  I am not sure that I believe her but the shirt does make me kind of sleepy.  I really only feel better when I am lying on Mommy’s feet and, of course, when they stop making all that racket.

thunder 2

And then just when the thunder stopped there was all these crack crack crack sounds from the house next door.  Mommy said that it was a silly holiday where people like to blow themselves up and shoot gun powder into the air.  Bowling elves in the sky and then crackers.  Where’s a girl to hide?  Oh, Peanut’s bed, of course, with Louise and Nine.  We were all kind of shook up.  Why don’t people do anything quietly!

7.4.14

We are speechless!  Thank you, Peanut, for saving us, and Mommy, for my new thunder shirt.

 Happy Wednesday!

7.4.12 Happy Independence Day: Keep Yourself & Pets Safe

Fireworks may be fun for some humans (not me), but they are surely not fun for the animals. In the United States, 4 July is when we celebrate our Independence as a country.  That is done with great fanfare and noise. My Grandmother was born on the 4th of July, so I used to think that when my mother’s brothers and sisters (all 9 of them) got together with all us kids (I have around 78 cousins) and shot off fireworks, it was for Gram’s birthday.  I always hated the loud noise.  Even today I have trouble with loud bursts (like balloons) or thunder.  It is not fear as much as some kind of ‘pain.’ I can’t really explain it but it feels like deep emotional or psychic pain to me.  I figure that is how the animals feel when they experience these loud, unexplainable sounds.  Ground fireworks are legal to purchase in Maryland, though people have sky ones too.  They started shooting them off about 2 weeks ago and won’t stop for another several weeks.  Squash E Bear would not leave the house for the whole month of July.  I used to have to push this big dog out the door to just go pee.  Sofie barks at the pops right now and Lulu and her come running if they are out and the ‘boom-booms’ start.  I hate this.  Please keep your animals safe and remember that turning on a radio or television in the room with your pet may help drowned out the noise.  For me, I like to watch them on TV where they look pretty but I can turn the sound down.

Here is a little article on helping your fearful dog: http://thebark.com/content/reducing-fear-your-dog#.T_JOd3hgggh

And I just wanted to say thank you to all the people and animals that serve my country and continue to keep my world safe as possible.  You are appreciated and always remembered.
