Monday Mischief: Remembering Past Mischief

Originally posted on 31 January 2012 at 6:01: Give it to me! It’s Mine!!!

I think it is funny how dogs want to possess everything; especially if another animal has it.  Louise and Sofie only want a toy if the other is playing with it, and then…..  oh my goodness, the whining that comes out of Sofie is ridiculous.  I really am going to have to get a tape recorder and have you all listen because it is like the world has ended and she really is in pain.  “Mommy, Louise has this…. Louise is taking the ring…. look Mommy, it’s mine… mine….MINE!”  Now I can’t say that Lulu is much better because just when things calm down she goes and steals something from Sofie’s pile.  The other day I gave them both bones before I went to the store, so that they might behave for C while I was gone.  Well I came home to find that one bone was played with while the other was almost perfect.

They only want what the other has.  I never know if I should buy two of the same bones or toys, or just one. They both play with the same one until it is destroyed, eaten, or taken away by me, so why bother getting two. Currently, their favorite backyard toy (which actually I think has sneaked into the house, because I just put it in the toy bin (come to think of it)), is a destroyed soft frisbee that Mojo’s humans were going to throw out because he had eaten out the center.  Well, not only do they love it, but it also has become a favorite of Miss Kitty.  Kitty likes to roll on top of it and cover it with her fluffy body.  She thinks that Sofie can’t see her hiding it.  You can imaging the pandemonium that ensues when Sofie realizes that Kitty is trying to pull a fast one on her.

Another interesting dynamic is that Lulu likes me to pull the rings and gets really ticked off when Sofie hones in on the play. So I got a three ring pull, but they both want to tug on the same ring. Hummmm…. very interesting.

One of my greatest pleasures is watching my two goofballs play.  They are silly and funny and just make me stop for a minute in my busy day and remember what is important.  Now don’t go telling them the truth – all the toys really are mine!

Monday Mischief: Fall Fields

MM101014.jpg

We love to run in the field on a lovely fall day.  We have to wait until all the kids are gone from the school yard, but then… it is all ours.  Just Sofie and me (and Mom, of course). – Louise

Monday Mischief: Putting The Garden To Bed

Puttingyardtobed102014

We spent a long time outside with Mom last weekend doing what she calls, “putting the garden to bed.”  Since the garden does not seem to have a kennel that it sleeps in, we were not sure what she meant.  But we helped her collect our toys from under the leafy things and chewed down lots of the grasses that were around.  Lulu still likes to sun herself by the pool, even though it is closed.  We love fall.  There are just such wonderful smells and piles to play in.

What mischief did you get into today?

Monday Mischief: Feeling Fall

Fall flowersWe love the fall flowers in the garden and the crisp air.  We could stay outside all day, as long as Mommy is with us.

Why won’t Mommy just sit in the yard with us all day?

Bark Out Loud.

What mischief have you gotten into today?

Thankful Thursday: Fall

What is it about the shift from August to September that makes everything change?   Does the universe know what a calendar is or that we flipped a page? It must because this morning was so crisp and so… fall like.  The leaves are starting to fall into the pool, so sadly, it will be closed this weekend.  Summer is over.

On the brighter side – I LOVE FALL!!!!  I can smell the pumpkins and the wood in the fireplaces.  I can feel the earth going to sleep, so that she can renew and restore and awaken in spring.  I like wearing sweaters and taking long leaf falling walks with the puppies.  I enjoy the turning of the leaves and the incredible colors and sites that they produce.  Fall is home to me.  Fall is comfort, like a bowl of good soup.

I am thankful for fall. What does the change of season mean to you?

(I know some of you are going into Spring right now, and that is OK too. BOL)

11.18.12 The Last Nasturtium

The last Nasturtium of the season is reaching for the sun.  She made it through Super Storm Sandy somehow, and is soaking up the last final sun rays of fall. Louise does that too.  She finds the one sunny spot, wherever it may be in the yard and lies down to soak it in.  She has always been a sun worshipper.  She just cracks me up because she will go to great lengths for one little sun spot.  Sofie on the other hand, is a shade dweller, like me.  She gets tired of Louise’s sunbathing after awhile and tends to be a spoiler: “Time to play, Lulu. Time to play!”

I love the smells of fall.  People are starting to use their fire places to take away the night chill and the air is filled with the earthy yet sweet aroma of burning wood.  There is something just so comforting to me about that smell.  The first time that I remember smelling burning wood was a summer camp bonfire when I was 5; I was mesmerized by the incredible smell.  I also love the smell of the crisp air in the morning, so clean and fresh, and then there is the smell of the the seasonal cooking.  Oh my….  all this from a Nasturtium.   I wish the internet had ‘smellavision,’ I would bottle some of these delicious scents and post them here for you to enjoy.  Well hopefully today you can at least enjoy a ray of sun like Louise.

9.26.12 Today I Will Savor The World

“If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy, and if it were merely challenging that would be no problem.  But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world.  This makes it hard to plan the day.” – E.B. White

I know exactly what White meant when he said this. In the beauty of the autumn days it is almost impossible to concentrate on the tasks at hand and not just want to grab a leash, some water, and a day pack and head out into the woods or along the river.  It is on days like this, when the air is crisp and cool but not yet cold, when the sky is bluer than blue and the clouds hang in the distance like fluffs of cotton that were placed there just for my observation, that I am forced, by my thirst for connection to mother earth and all her creations, that I stop saving the world and just bask in the gift of the day.

Anticipation of the colors that will come in the next few weeks from the changing season brings me great happiness.  The reds, yellows, and oranges of the changing Maples, Oaks, Elms, and SweetGum.  On our walks the acorns and large nuts are falling in large numbers on our heads.  I kept thinking that the Squirrels were aiming for us, but I realized it was just… fall.  Are you familiar with the ‘GumBalls’ that drop from the SweetGum? They are prickly and roll under foot.  On many a walk, because I tend to be looking everywhere else but down at my feet, I have ended up flat on the ground after stepping on one of those silly balls.  I always laugh when that happens, because the dogs come to me as to say, “Mom, Mom, are you Ok?  What are you doing down here?”

What an incredible opportunity the change of the seasons provides us in understanding the cycle of life and the importance of change.  The having to say goodbye to things, like butterflies and hummingbirds, that will make their way to Mexico or Panama, or some other nice warm southern spot to winter and reproduce, and say hello to the wild swans and the geese, coming down from the Yukon or somewhere in Canada to winter on my Chesapeake Bay.

Fall for me is the time to take stock of myself, my world, and my place in it.  It is a time to regroup and prepare for the ‘going in’ of winter.  To clear my slate, with humans and with nature, for any wrongs I have transgressed in the previous months, and to start fresh for a whole new year.  Today I will enjoy the world, tomorrow I will get back to saving it.

8.28.12 Signs Of Fall

This week has been wonderful for butterflies in the garden. I capture this shot of an Eastern Black Swallowtail on the grape right before Louise tried to eat it.   A Yellow Swallowtail actually landed on her and freaked her out a bit (it was cute but I could not get the camera out fast enough).

Sofie Chasing Butterlies

Both dogs don’t really understand flying insects very well.  I see them constantly trying to eat bees and jump after butterflies.  We also have these very large furry spiders that kind of encase the house in webs this time of year.  I was bringing in groceries the other evening and one swung down over the front door and caused me to drop the case of water that I was carrying and run.  I worry that one of the dogs will try to eat one of the spiders and die: they are really scary looking.

V found a whole family of new born mice inside the extra vacuum we store in the garage the other day.  This is a sure sign of fall coming our way.  Mother Mouse must have come through the bottom bar and up the hose and had her babies in the inside bag (how smart is that?).  While V was working in the garage there was  this nibble nibble scratch scratch noise and upon closer inspection, unzipped the bag part of the vacuum, and all these little pink babies fell out.  They were quickly scooped up and placed back in the bag and brought outside, with the hope that Mother Mouse will move them somewhere else (outside please!).  I guess the Black Snake, who always leaves his skin on the garage shelves for us, will tell us where the mice are… because that is life in our garage in the late summer.
