Follow Up Friday: Queens & Dons & More Queens

Today is Follow-up Friday hosted by Jodi from Heart Like A Dog.  This is where we review the week behind so that we can launch into the week ahead (or something like that).

Another flat-out running to the finish line week.  I have started walking the dogs twice a day if I can, so that they and I get some rest (funny to think of walking dogs as restful, but for me it truly is my heaven).

QueenNoel
Last Caturday, Noel was being the royal girl that she is.  Someone noticed she was giving the ‘down’ signal with her paw.  I guess no one got their head cut off so we made it through the royal cat viewing.  She really is the boss around here.

Louise, showed her Italian side on Monday Mischief (no offense to that part of the family).  No one ended up “sleeping with the fishes,” so again, we survived the test.

I see a pattern here that was never intended.  Do you?

We highlighted a wonderful 12-year-old named Kitty on Tuesday’s Tails.  It is getting really hard each week to watch all these senior animals be taken into the shelter and struggle to find new homes.  Please adopt a senior, if you can.

We were definitely looking for words on Wordless Wednesday to describe poor little Sofie sticking her head over the windowsill trying to see me as I was leaving.  Sometimes Louise is there too, but you can’t see her because she is black and the camera just does not pick her up.  If only you could hear Sofie, whine whine whine.  “Mommy, oh, you are leaving me!”  What a drama queen.  I guess she an Noel will have to battle for the crown this week.  You can just make out her ear, eye, and nose in the air.  BOL

Sofie Window closeup

We are very Thankful Thursday, for all food, but especially for COOKIES!!!  Everyone around the zoo loves their treats.  Sofie is a chewer and Louise is a goobler.  But, most of the time Louise waits and then cleans up Sofie’s crumbs (of which there are many).

cookie

Where did that week go?  Hope your’s was royal and good fun.

Just another DogDaz morning at the zoo ❤

8.16.13 Follow Up Friday: Fuzzy, Crabby, and Delicious

Today is Follow-up Friday hosted by Jodi from Heart Like A Dog.  This is where we review the week behind so that we can launch into the week ahead (or something like that).

3d_snowman_2As Indian Winter (see last week’s FUF if you want explanation) continues this summer, here in the Mid-Atlantic, we are having some wonderful fall weather.  We have had the windows open almost every day this week (except when it was raining).  I even had a sweatshirt on this morning out with the dogs.  But, it is August.  This is unheard of.  I am not complaining, but are we going to have summer in October?

Last Caturday, no one told me I had the wrong date on my post (it said 8.3.13 instead of 8.10.13).  You most have all thought I was a week behind.  Hahahahha.  Nine had his tail in the planter’s hands.  It was a purrffect tail aid.

Black and White Sunday was a fuzzy focused walk in the park with the girls, Louise and Sofie.  I liked the fuzzy effect (actually I did not even realize I did that), but some people didn’t like it.  Oh well.  Here is a picture from the same series but in color.

Louise Sofie Park Aug 2013

Louise & Sofie

Mischief Monday found us down at the docks checking to see what was in the crab pots.  Nothing.

On Tuesday’s Tails, we featured a beautiful green-eyed senior kitty named Betty.  Everyone loved her eyes, her sour expression, and wished her a speedy new home.

Louise showed you her new pink flying thingie on Wordless Wednesday.  She keeps wanted to play tug with it, instead of toss (tug being her favorite game).  Sofie steals it and takes it under a tree, and then you know the rest….

Gimme that! No, you gimme that! It's MINE! MMMMMOOOOOMMM!

Gimme that! No, you gimme that!
It’s MINE! MMMMMOOOOOMMM!

And, Thankful Thursday, I grabbed a great old shot of Muffin laying on tomatoes from our garden.  The first crop is in, and I just love that picture.  Really miss that Muffin Man.

8.9.13 Follow Up Friday: Indian Winter?

Today is Follow-up Friday hosted by Jodi from Heart Like A Dog.  This is where we review the week behind so that we can launch into the week ahead (or something like that).

The weather broke beautiful this week from that terrible heat we have been having.  They call the warm weather of late autumn, Indian Summer, so I am going to call this, Indian Winter.  (reference: Deedler, William (Fall 1996). “Just What Is Indian Summer And Did Indians Really Have Anything To Do With It?”National Weather Service Detroit office.))  I am not complaining, it is marvelous.  Actually Indian WInter supposedly happens in the spring when you think winter is over but then it snows, but I think all this cool weather in summer deserves a name too.

On Caturday, the 3 cats were on the bed for their late night snack.  These 3 only come together for eating.  It was easier to take a picture when there were 5 then it is for 3,  I guess Noel really wants nothing to do with the young ones.  I can understand, because Nine is a bully.  Here were the 5 in bed with me before we lost Muffy and Cuddles.

cat bed

Black & White Sunday was a cool shot of the dogs in the sports field.  I think the mowed grass looks like waves in the ocean.  What do you think?

Of course the dogs were up to their usual Mischief Monday.  We were sitting nicely on the couch watching a TV show when they had to toss and bite for a better position near me.  Actually, I should say Sofie did, since she seems to always be the one to start something.  BOL.

Sofie: I want to be a cat so I can snack on the bed too!

Sofie: I want to be a cat so I can snack on the bed too!

I showcased 2 new seniors on Tuesday’s Tails.  It is so sad when seniors are in the shelter.  I do hope it helps them find their final homes.  I wish I could create a no-kill safe home for animals 7 and older.  Wouldn’t that be great.  Shady Acres.  They could live out there lives or find final homes. Oh Dog, I don’t want to think about the amount of care that would take –  I can dream though, right?

Wordless Wednesday were our constant pool guests – uninvited but always welcome.  We have several pair of ducks that return year after year.  I do wonder if they are generations of the previous families?  How long do ducks live and do they come back to the same nesting spots year after year?  We like to name them.  Last year I had 7 males that hung together in the bushes all the time.  Duck Gangs!

There is so much to be Thankful for and Thankful Thursday focused to the heavens and gave you a beautiful dog cloud.  I love cloud formations and pride myself on seeing all kinds of things.

That’s it for the week. Thanks for playing along with us.  Check out the hop below and you can go play with others.

8.2.13 Follow Up Friday: Fly Away Week!

Today is Follow-up Friday hosted by Jodi from Heart Like A Dog.  This is where we review the week behind so that we can launch into the week ahead (or something like that).

With the heat of the summer, I was not surprised that on Caturday, Noel slept her usual 18+ hours.  What a perfect life a house cat has.  I wish I could sleep even 6 hours.

Noel sleeping in the window

Noel sleeping in the window

As the heat continued, Louise plopped herself down on the deck in the shade, and I caught her rolling her eyes on Black and White Sunday.  It really isn’t the heat but the humidity that is getting to all of us.

swallows

Ok – so maybe it was only 5 or 6 but it felt like this.
Image from Google

So I figured we would go have some fun in the field, but as you saw on Monday Mischief, we kicked up all the bugs and then the swallows decided they wanted us out of there and swooped to kill.

This week was $10 for any cat over 10 lbs at the shelter, but for Tuesday’s Tails we found a black beauty named Viola that we thought would be a great addition to any family.

The heat finally broke and we have had some nice mid-80 degrees days, but I still can’t get the dogs to go in their pool.  Wordless Wednesday, featured Louise with her toes in, but Sofie snubbing her nose at the whole thing.  I was actually in their pool, but not even that made them want to go.  Oh well.

Thankful Thursday featured an incredible rescue of Ozzie the Osprey from a fishing line.  If you haven’t seen the Osprey-Cam, you really should go check it out.  Life in the nest, in real streaming video.

My empty Osprey nest Baby's have fledged

My Osprey nest b4

Still no job yet, but I am redoing my resume (for the 10th time) and trying to focus more on defining the best of my skills.  I wish that PetBlogging was a full time gig.  That would be a perfect life for me and the zoo.

Peanut leaves tomorrow for 10 months overseas for school.  Sofie has already claimed her bed as her domain.  It will be interesting to see how well we can all Skype and will the dogs really understand it is her.  I know that we want our birds to leave the nest, but sometimes I do wish I could hold on to her just for a moment longer.  I guess this weeks lesson for me comes from Tom and Audrey Osprey – tying them to the nest could have deadly consequences.  FLY PEANUT FLY!  (But do come home next summer to visit.)

7.26.13 Follow Up Friday: Pools, Windows, and Happiness

Today is Follow-up Friday hosted by Jodi from Heart Like A Dog.  This is where we review the week behind so that we can launch into the week ahead (or something like that).

We are busier now then we ever were when Mom was working full-time.  How can that be?  So many things going on.  Caturday  we were thinking about Cuddles.  She only liked V and was a real one person cat.  But, for V she was a cuddler.  We don’t have any cuddle cats now. 😦

Black and White Sunday was a sad sight of the dogs wishing for a swim in the pool. So I went and bought them one, which they snubbed immediately.  No!  They only want to swim in the big pool with the humans.  They can’t come in for multiple reasons, but the biggest being that we have a liner that would tear from their claws. Liner pools are delicate that way.  Plus, I really don’t want all that hair in the filter.

IMG_20130724_183454_011

On left – dog pool; On right – my pool

Monday’s Mischief was a gazillion butterflies on our Butterfly bushes.  We love to watch them dance and play.  Luckily I had already scheduled that post because we got hit with a lightning strike on Sunday night which knocked out the TV, phone, and internet.  We were out of service until Tuesday afternoon, which is why I missed the usual Tuesday’s Tail Blog Hop. But Noel did manage to post a notice from my Smartphone (that social cat). All the kids, and me, were freaking because we have become so dependent on our electronics.  Humbling to have to do something else besides social media or TV for a few evenings.

Baby Stella was hiding in K8’s window on Wordless Wednesday.  She just loves K8 and windows and hiding.  MOL.

And then finally on Thankful Thursday, I was jubalant in finding out that Sofie’s rash was not scabbies, as I feared, but a skin bacteria, due to chubby skin folds staying wet too long and growing bad stuff.  I can deal with that!  Now I am going to collapse by the pool until further notice (and get those dogs swimming).

7.19.13 Follow Up Friday: Home Is Where the Pets Are

Today is Follow-up Friday hosted by Jodi from Heart Like A Dog.  This is where we review the week behind so that we can launch into the week ahead (or something like that).

Sofie Louise July 2013

We finally arrived home after an 8 1/2 hr drive from the Carolina’s in torrential rain.  It wasn’t fun.

We started our blog week back with a picture K8 took of the alligator behind our rental on our last morning in Sunset Beach, North Carolina.  He was perfect for Mischief Monday, don’t you think?

By Tuesday we were settling back into the home and blog routine and we featured a lovely senior, named Steven, on Tuesday’s Tail Adoption Blog Hop

9 1694

Louise was so excited to see me when I returned home (they were on vacation at Sonya’s) that she scratched the heck out of my leg.  Ouch! She did not mean it, but those lab talons are wicked sharp.

Before we left I had noticed that Louise was licking herself a lot.  Sonya, the most wonderful dog sitter in the world, called me while we were away to let me know that Louise had a cut in a very uncomfortable spot.  Well, when I got home, it did not look good, so…  off we went to Dr. Kate.  Louise was not happy.  Now she is on antibotics and is suppose to wear the cone of shame, but, I am keeping her with me and monitoring her licking, so that she does not have to go through the same humiliation that her silly little sister, Sofie, just finished going through last month.  Sofie, of course, would not stop licking, Louise, is a good listener.

9 1679

On Wordless Wednesday,  Noel was wondering what special presents I brought from the beach.  I did give her a shell, but she just ignored it.  At least she did not scratch me.  Nine is terrorizing her and even Stella seems to be getting into the act.  What I don’t understand is why she doesn’t just sit on both those little cats and crush them, but she doesn’t.  Ah, the life of an Alpha.

Finally on Thankful Thursday,  I was able to thank Magdalena Vandenberg for giving me the wonderful Very Inspiring Blogger Award.  I received it when I was away.  What a nice return present.

It has been hotter than an oven since we returned so I am going out today to get the dogs a baby pool.  We all need to cool off in the DOG DAZ (days) of summer.

That’s it for the week. Thanks for playing along with us.  Check out the hop below and you can go play with others.

7.5.13 Follow Up Friday then ON VACATION!

Today is Follow-up Friday hosted by Jodi from Heart Like A Dog.  This is where we review the week behind so that we can launch into the week ahead (or something like that).

On Caturday, we were remembering Miss Constance Kitty (RIP), when she was a kitten, and how she would always play with Squash E Bear’s (RIP) tail.  It still cracks us up.  She thought it was another kitten.
2012-03-09_20-57-45_785
And since we were thinking about tails last weekend, Sunday’s Black & White was a shot of the dogs down by the river at Breezy Point.  You might be able to see black Louise in the distance by the trees but Sofie’s tail caught the very bottom of the shot.  It reminded me of that game – “I Spy.”  Did you find her?  Most of you did.
On Mischief Monday we went swimming in our Louise’s best girlfriend, Amy’s, pool.  3 dogs + 1 baby pool = lots of fun.  Sofie likes to play alligator, where she gets all the way down in the water with just her eyes and ears out, but the labs don’t seem to find that funny. I do.  BOL.
2 Labs and a Sofie tail

2 Labs and a Sofie tail

For our Tuesday’s Tails Blog Hop, we featured the cutest long haired cat named Rags.  We hope she finds her home.  We only have short hair cats at the zoo right now and I think they shed way more than the long hairs do.  Don’t you?  If only people understood that, maybe they would adopt her quick, because she is a beauty.
Wordless Wednesday were some Irish Wolfhounds from my business trip to Dublin, Ireland.   I did not take the picture personally, but I really wanted to share these beautiful big dogs.
Wednesday was also my last day at IBM after 18 years. Over the years I got to see a lot of wonderful places and work with a bunch of great people. Everywhere I travel, you know I am attracted to the animals and try to bring some home to the blog.  Now onto the rest of my life – more animals to see!
usa_md_clr
Thursday was American Independence Day (Fourth of July) and we thanked all the humans and animals that keep us safe and free.  Thank you for your service!!!!  Please think about adopting a retired military dog – what a wonderful, well trained, addition to any family.
LOGO_Military_Working_Dog_Adoptions
We are also happy that Sofie’s toe is on the mend.  She finishes the antibiotic today and seems to be leaving it alone, except for an occasional chew.
That’s it for the week. Thanks for playing along with us.
I am taking my first (much needed) family vacation in years starting tomorrow (isn’t forced retirement wonderful?). The daily zoo pictures will continue every day but not the hops and chats and I may be delayed on comment replies since I will be on the beach.
Warning: To any robbers out there, the house/cat sitter has a gun and knows how to use it, so don’t think that my house will be empty/  Also, we taught Noel to shoot just in case you get passed the door.

May you all have a wonderful week, DogDaz will return in full to cyberspace on Monday, 15 July.

6.28.13 Follow Up Friday: End of a month wrap

Today is Follow-up Friday hosted by Jodi from Heart Like A Dog.  This is where we review the week behind so that we can launch into the week ahead (or something like that).

underwaterHow did the end of June happen? Is this Follow-up or Fall-behind Friday – I am not sure anymore.  Sorry if I haven’t commented on your stuff in awhile, just trying to keep my head above water – but you are all still making me smile so hang in there with me.

Last Caturday I was looking at pictures of Nine when he first came to us.  They said he was a year old, but we just don’t think so. At 2 1/2, he is still such a little man.  Cat age only matters to humans though, the cats don’t really care.  Here’s another one from his first days at the zoo.

Nine - 2011

Nine

Black & White Sunday was the girls after a romp in the water.  I added a little grain otherwise you could not see Louise in all her darkness.  The balance between the two different coats pushes my minimal photo skills.  Wet dogs really teach me about coats: Louise dries before she even gets out of the water, but Sofie…. she is wet for days.  Kind of like my curly hair.  BOL

By Monday Mischief we were in major chew on each other face mode.  Louise just gets so jealous when Sofie wants to lie anywhere near me on the coach.  “Mommy is MINE!”  They are so funny.  In the end, I leave and they wonder what happened.  When I return we all chill better.  You may remember this picture of them protecting my knees, nicely, from both sides.  That is the way I like it.

Knees

Tuesday’s Tail focused on some senior puppies that need new homes.  Many of you were so upset that people would give up their older sweethearts.  It is heartbreaking.  But I think about a few things.  In these economic times, maybe they want to ensure their elder pets get fed and medical care which they no longer can afford to give them (OK, it’s a stretch.).  Or, which really upsets me, the owners are placed in a nursing facility that does not allow animals.  I really wish that nursing homes did allow people to take their senior pets with them, I would die quick without mine.  Hopefully, I will never have to find out.  ADOPT A SENIOR!!

I am happy to say that Sofie is doing somewhat better today.  You read her story on Wordless Wednesday.   Since it has been 4 days since the vet visit, I took the cone off and am letting her work off the bandage.  The vet said try to keep it on 3 to 5 days, so I figure it is safe to start giving her, her head back.  The cone really depressed her big time.

sofie begging dec

You have all been so thoughtful, especially about the conehead toe incident and also my job situation.  On Thankful Thursday, as always, I say my blessings.  And now, it is Friday.

That’s it for the week. Thanks for playing along with us.  Check out the hop below and you can go play with others.

6.21.13 Follow Up Friday: Past and Future

Today is Follow-up Friday hosted by Jodi from Heart Like A Dog.  This is where we review the week behind so that we can launch into the week ahead (or something like that). Has it really been a week already.  I am losing track of time. Last weekend I was feeling nostalgic and Caturday was honoring The Muffin Man.  He is very missed around here.  Muffy was one of those cats that owned your heart.  He was smart, and funny, and fearless.  Orange Toms are just special.  They have their own way about them.

Muffy Nov

Muffy Nov

Then on Sunday we visited Squash E Bear in black & white.  There are so many incredible memories with Squash.  K8 said he saved our family and he did.  When he came into our lives, the adults were unraveling and the kids were a hot mess.  He calmed us and brought us all together so that we passed through that time and become stronger.  Somehow he healed us. 100_5163 On Mischief Monday the crazy dogs went chasing the ducks and the geese.  Sofie almost ate them.  Those were ducklings under the dock, but it was a different goose family swimming by on the other side.  It is very busy with new life down by the river.

IMG_20130614_125921_075

On our usual Tuesday’s Tails, we featured an iguana and a hamster at the local animal control.  I used to think that the dog pound (why did they call it that?) was just dogs and cats.  Not ours.  I do hope that critters get adopted too. Wordless Wednesday showed the pups getting their nails clipped at PetSmart.  That was the first (and also last) time that I will take them there (usually my groomer does it or the vet).  When we got home I found blood all over the deck and the kitchen floor because Louise’s back black nail was cut to the quick.  It finally stopped but only after I put a white sock on her to keep her from getting blood everywhere.  The whole reason I took her was because I am afraid of cutting the black nails myself.  She is fine but it freaked me out.  Accidents happen, but I might as well do it myself. IMG_20130611_101403_679 And yesterday, on Thankful Thursday, I told you how thankful I am for all I have and for my wonderful pets.  Though I got laid off last week, I know that with the support of my family, both human and fur, the world will find it’s balance and all things will be as they should – just different.  (How nice it would be if pet blogging could be my new full time gig!)

6.14.13 Follow Up Friday: Fast Week

Today is Follow-up Friday hosted by Jodi from Heart Like A Dog.  This is where we review the week behind so that we can launch into the week ahead (or something like that).

Noel was in charge of the blog until Mommy came home on Tuesday. She focused a great deal on herself, especially on Caturday.  She was so exhausted she callapsed on Monday Mischief.

Noel, the Christmas Cat

Noel, the Christmas Cat

By Black & White Sunday the dogs were really ready for Mommy to come home.  They waited patiently under the cherry tree, but were very bored.

Mom finally arrived after much flight delay on Monday night and shared some pictures of Irish dogs on Tuesday. She developed a terrible airplane germ cold and is feeling pretty blue.  So today’s catch up will be short.

Midweek Sofie showed everyone what she did while Mom was away on Wordless Wednesday.  It is not like she did much different than she does when Mom is home, except for the lack of walks and getting to ride in the car with Peanut or K8.

Thankful Thursday was easy because we were able to show you our Gratitude Dog Rocks.  And they rock!  I actually took one to Ireland with me so that I could be close to home at all times.
