5.23.13 Thankful Thursday: Miss Harper Lee

super-sweet-award1

Last week I was honored by Miss Harper Lee of thek9harperlee, with a wonderful Super Sweet Blogging Award.  That was, should I say… super sweet of you Miss Harper Lee.  Thank you very much.

super-sweet-1-thek9harperlee

Miss Harper Lee

The rules for the Super Sweet Blogging Award are simple:

  • Thank the Super Sweet Blogger who nominated you.  Thank you thank you thank you Miss Harper Lee
  • Answer five super sweet questions. Below
  • Include the Super Sweet Blogging award image in your blog post. Done.
  • Nominate a baker’s dozen bloggers (that’s 13, for those of you who don’t cook or visit the pastry shop) Below

  • Notify your nominees on their blogs. Ok, I will do my best to be timely about this.

Super Sweet Answers:

1. Cookies or Cake? It is definitely Cookies around here.  Gluten and Dairy free people cookies (which actually can be very tasty, if you buy or make the right ones) and dog cookies (Sofie will only eat them if they have molasses or peanut butter in them – Lulu will eat anything). Every night before bed.

2. Chocolate or Vanilla? Though chocolate is a very nice flavor, and a great sauce over ice cream, I love vanilla.  Vanilla beans, vanilla syrup, I love vanilla!  My Mom used to buy vanilla syrup when I was a kid and I would put it in everything.

3.  What is your favorite sweet treat?  Now this is hard.  I used to love M&M candies, plain or peanut.  Pretty much anything M&M.  But I am not allowed to eat them anymore.  So, I would say my favorite sweet treat now a days is a Tofutti’s Marry Me non-dairy ice cream bars. “Find full-bodied vanilla made with organic sugar partnered with rich, deep organic chocolate coating.”

4.  When do you crave sweet things the most? I always want cookies when I am having my evening tea, but I crave sweets the most when I am stressed (who doesn’t?)  The animals don’t know sweet, so it is more a human thing, I think.

5. If you had a sweet nickname, what would it be?  I call Lulu ‘Brownie,’ because she has these beautiful dark brown stripes under her black coat.  Sofie is my ‘Gummy Bear,’ because she is so chubby cute you want to squeeze her.

Now to name the BAKER’S DOZEN NOMINEES:

I am going to start with a food fight and throw the cupcake at

(1) thecatfromhell
(2) The Misadventures of Misaki
(3) Sugar, The Golden Woofs
(4) Speedy the Cheeky Rex Rabbit
(5) bumpyroadtobubba
(6) Cupcake Speaks
(7) Dakota’s Den
(8) AnimalCouriers
(9) Long Life Cats & Dogs
(10) My Three Moogies
(11) Dogs N Pawz
(12) Jones Natural Chews
(13) Expressions In a Teacup

FOOD FIGHT!!!!!!!!!! Choose your confection and start throwing.  Thanks for the fun, Miss Harper Lee.

5.9.13 Thankful Thursday: Lessons From Fear

Louise May 2013

I am thankful for this incredible fur creature that I call Louise.  If any one would have told me that I would have fallen for a fearful black hound/ labby abused puppy, I would not have predicted it.  I was always a lighter color, longer fur type of dog person.  But ever since this little 4 or 5 month old sweetness came into my world 3 years ago, she has taught me so much.    Louise has taught me:

  • That fear can keep you safe.  It can keep you from entering into a dangerous situation.  You need to listen to your gut and respect your fear and the fear of those around you.
  • That it is best to keep things simple, which keeps them less scary.  Like not walking in the middle of too many people all at once, which can be overwhelming.
  • That small steps can be very big.  For example, when Louise does not bark or cower at every human that we pass, that is a victory.
  • That learning what freaks you out, and avoiding it as much as possible, can make a world of difference in the rest of your day.
  • Oh yes, and that black dogs are beautiful.

I believe that people and animals and situations all come into my life for the lessons that they teach me (and I them).  Thank you Lulu Belle for my lessons in being more aware of the world around me and you, for listening to my instincts more, and for being patient.

4.25.13 Thankful Thursday: Moscow Wild Dogs Ride Subways

Usually on Thankful Thursday I write about things in my life here at the zoo that we are thankful for, but today, I am reblogging a story from DogFiles, because I think it is a wonderful and generous and something that should be shared. – DogDaz

——————————————-

Moscow’s Wild Dogs Ride Subways To City Center In Search Of Food

Each morning, like clockwork, they board the subway, off to begin their daily routine amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.

But these aren’t just any daily commuters. These are stray dogs who live in the outskirts of Moscow Russia and commute on the underground trains to and from the city centre in search of food scraps.

Then after a hard day scavenging and begging on the streets, they hop back on the train and return to the suburbs where they spend the night.

Moscow-Train-Dog-1

Experts studying the dogs, who usually choose the quietest carriages at the front and back of the train, say they even work together to make sure they get off at the right stop – after learning to judge the length of time they need to spend on the train.

Scientists believe this phenomenon began after the Soviet Union collapsed in the 1990s, and Russia’s new capitalists moved industrial complexes from the city centre to the suburbs.

Dr Andrei Poiarkov, of the Moscow Ecology and Evolution Institute, said: “These complexes were used by homeless dogs as shelters, so the dogs had to move together with their houses. Because the best scavenging for food is in the city centre, the dogs had to learn how to travel on the subway – to get to the centre in the morning, then back home in the evening, just like people.”

Dr Poiarkov told how the dogs like to play during their daily commute. He said: “They jump on the train seconds before the doors shut, risking their tails getting jammed. They do it for fun. And sometimes they fall asleep and get off at the wrong stop.”

Moscow-Train-Dog-2

The dogs have also amazingly learned to use traffic lights to cross the road safely, said Dr Poiarkov. And they use cunning tactics to obtain tasty morsels of shawarma, a kebab-like snack popular in Moscow.

With children the dogs “play cute” by putting their heads on youngsters’ knees and staring pleadingly into their eyes to win sympathy – and scraps.

Dr Poiarkov added: “Dogs are surprisingly good psychologists.”

I am thankful for the people of Moscow that allow these strays to live a complete life. What are you thankful for?

4.18.13 Thankful Thursday: Children and Helpers

Today I want to take a moment to say thank you to the helpers in my life and to remember the dead and injured from the terrible events of the Boston Marathon Bombing on Monday.

In the wake of the bombing, the internet, and even the evening news her in the USA, has reflected on a quote by the children’s advocate and showman, Fred Rogers.   He said,

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

That statement is so true and something we should all teach our children (and learn ourselves).  Look for the helpers.  That is important to do even when you are not scared. And remember that animals can be those helpers, as well as humans.

mrrogers

You may not know that Fred Rogers was also a positive voice for pets.  In 1998, he wrote a book called “When A Pet Dies,”  to help children deal with the sadness around losing their first pet.  I like his view on children and pets and it is clear from his writings that pets are definitely among the positive helpers for children’s growth.

“Pets often serve as a trustworthy confidant for a child’s feelings of loneliness, sadness or fear. When adults and friends don’t seem to have time to play, a child can usually count on a pet to be a partner in a game. When a child is sad, a pet can usually be counted on to “listen.” When a child has been scolded and feels bad, a pet will still wag its tail nonjudgmentally and remind the child that he or she is still loved.” – Fred Rogers

I am thankful for people like Fred Rogers, who add a voice of calmness during stressful times, and to all the helpers, 2 and 4 legged, that I have encountered in my scary moments.

What are you thankful for today?

Thank you ‘Oh Great Powers That Be’ for the flowers.  Mom says she would like a few days of spring weather, if you could arrange it, instead of straight into summer temperatures, but we are thankful for what we can get.

4.4.13 Thankful Thursday: A Moment In Time

I don’t know about you, but sometimes, the simplest things can make me smile. I feel so blessed and am so thankful for those moments.  Take for example, Louise running full speed when I whistle for her.  I love to watch her run.  When she gets into it, she runs with such abandon and at that moment, she is the happiest dog in the world. It is a moment in time; a thankful moment; a happy moment.  Today I happened to catch this moment on video.  I hope that it makes you smile.

What moment are you thankful for today?

3.21.13 Thankful Thursday: Playing Tag With Little Binky And You

First, we must say thank you Mother Nature for the spring equinox today.  Love Spring Love Love Love Love.

IMAGE$1E37E848143F648D[1]

And we are thankful this week for AngelWhisper2011. Little Binky and Granny are playing tag with us.  (The dogs especially like to play tag when they can chase cats, so they say a special thanks.)  Binky and Granny have a very special relationship, as Granny has a gift for healing animals and has a special animal that whispers to her from the great meadow in the sky. His name was Angel, when he prowled the earth.  Little Binky is some cool looking cat!

 angel

Thank you for playing tag with us.  Our youngest zooling, Baby Stella, will be answering for us today.

Here are the Tag Game rules:

1. Post these rules – Done.

2. Post a photo of yourself and eleven random facts about you – Done below

3. Answer the questions given to you in the tagger’s post.- Done below

4. Create eleven new questions and tag new people to answer them.- Done below

5. Go to their blog/twitter and let them know they have been tagged – going, going, tag you are it!!!

Here are 11 random facts about Baby Stella: stella

  1. I sleep in the jungle of plants in Mommy’s bathroom.
  2. I like to eat by myself in the kitten room.  I tried eating in the kitchen with all the other animals, but decided I like to dine alone.
  3. My favorite spot during the day is looking out the laundry room window.
  4. When I can sneak into K8’s room, I like to hide on her bed.
  5. Many days you will find me hiding under Mommy’s bed. It is dark and quiet.
  6. That blond dog, Sofie, chases me even though Mommy tells her not to.
  7. My brother Nine steals all the toys and hogs everything, all the time.
  8. I talk to Mommy at dinner time and tell her where I want to eat.
  9. Mommy thinks I was born in September 2011.  That would make me 1 1/2 years old.
  10. I eat plants.
  11. I love my family, even though I am shy most of the time.  It is hard being the youngest.
Stella last night at bed time w/ K8. (photo by K8)

Stella last night at bed time w/ K8. (photo by K8)

Here are Little Binky’s 11 questions for Stella:

1. What do you prefer, water or milk? – There is no milk in this house, Mommy is dairy free. We drink water only.

2. Do you like rain or snow? – I have only seen it through the window, but I think I would prefer snow.

3. Do you believe in Furry-land? – Are you telling me there isn’t a Furry-land? “MOMMY!!!!! Say it ain’t true.”

4. Do you believe in Angels? –   Of course we do. We have several old souls in the house but not any angels at this time.  Mom says the angels only come if we need special help, but the spirit of our past loves are with us all the time.

5. What do you do if you find a lot of money?  I am not sure what money is, but I would give it to Noel, since she is head cat.

6. When are you the most active and when you are the most laziest inactive?  I am pretty quiet most of the time, but I like to play in the late afternoon and right before Mom goes to bed.

7. What do you do if you had to take care of your own dinner? I am sure that Noel and Nine would help me and together we would catch lots of field mice and maybe even a snake. The dogs tend to eat everything pretty quickly so I think we would have to hide from them.

8. Where would you fly to if you had wings? Not far since I am a home buddy.  I don’t even go up on top of the cabinets like Nine does.  I do like jungles, as I sleep hidden in all the plants in Mom’s bathroom at night.

9. How do you show your affection?  I am a very private cat.  I show affection when Mommy is captive in the bathroom or if there is a snack on the bed.  I like to push my little big human, K8, around by poking her in the face when she is sleeping.  Mom is trying to teach me to be held, but I don’t like human touch very much.

10. What color is your favorite?  Brown (I am a beautiful brown, don’t you think?)

11. What smell is your favorite? FISH

===========================

We love our blog friends so much and we are having trouble deciding who to pick for the game of tag (and it is stressing us out)  sooooooo  TAG YOU ARE ALL IT!!!!:  Please answer the following questions to play:

1. What is your favorite hiding place?

2. If you could talk to your human for 5 minutes in their language, what would you say?

3.  What is your most favorite food?

4. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?

5. Do you have a hero?

6.  Do you have a bed time?

7.  What makes you laugh?

8.  What do you do that makes others laugh?

9.  Does anything scare you?

10.  Do you know how to dance?

11.  If you could be any pet blogger, who would it be?

2.21.13 Thankful Thursday: Peace Love & Whiskers Shined On Us

versatileblogger1

We are Thankful today for Peace, Love, & Whiskers, an amazing blog about amazing animals.

plw

Peace, Love, & Whiskers takes extra special care of some extra special pussy cats and doggies and provides us out here in the blogosphere with wonderful interviews.  You really need to go visit.  Thank you PL&W for the great work you do in highlighting kitties and doggies  that need special care and love.  Several of the DogDaz rescues, canine, feline, and guinea, have all needed a little extra love to get through their days, but they have brought us tremendous joy.  The Muffin Man, our orange and white Tom, had heart disease his whole life (2 pills a day), and was the king of our castle.  Miss Constance Kitty was born with a crooked spine, but did great with it in her early years – until the pain got to be too much.  Squash E. Bear was a two times a day insulin diabetic, who eventually went blind, but he and I would still walk a few miles every day.  Mr. Motto, the king of Guinea Pigs, had pneumonia almost immediately upon adoption.  It was very touch and go for over a month, but he lived another 7 years. Noel, the Christmas cat, has feline Herpes but she is doing great and just turned 6 last week.   So thank you Peace, Love, & Whiskers for taking up the cause of the animals that need a little extra love.

liebsterawardPL&W bestowed upon us 2 awards; the Versatile Blogger Award and the Liebster Award.  We are honored and thankful for that too.

Since we have been very lucky to receive these awards before, we hope you don’t mind but you can find our previous responses to the questions on our Awards page.  We love all awards and appreciate them, but Mom is running out of time to get her work done, take care of the zoo, and still write the blog, so she is trying to economize where she can,

We would like to bestow on Peace, Love, & Whiskers the coveted DogDaz Pick Of The Litter Award, for all the great things you do.

pickofthelitter

You get to pick any award you would like from our Awards page – because you are our pick of the litter!
