The Summer Dog Days of DogDaz are finally here!
We are taking a summer break.
Mommy is going to roll on a beach somewhere and kick up some sand.
Everyone needs a break sometime.

Monday Mischief: Cats Up – Dogs Down
You would think that my animals never saw food before in their lives; 6 animals, 7 different foods, plus veggies twice a day (not including the snacks that I know V gives the cats). Everyone wants to be in THEIR SPOT or they don’t want to eat. Cats on the counter – dogs on the floor (or the dogs will gobble it all in a second). Nine likes privacy, so I hide him behind the cat food canister. I moved Mini Cooper recently next to Nine because she used to eat in front of the fish tank and was getting too distracted and never finished. Noel, of course, is in her window. Heckle and Jeckle Louise and Sofie chow down on the other side of the room in their puzzle slow bowls. Stella is in her private suite. I have to monitor or Noel and Sofie will gang up and eat everyone else’s food. I have learned that if I go do something in another room and don’t pay attention for more than a minute, there will be chewed bowls and even canisters on the floor very quickly.
Can you see the tape holding the lid of the canister together and the chew holes? Mommy left the room 🙂

Caturday: Yup! She Gets Me
I know Mom speaks Cat because she clearly understands what I say. Mostly I talk about food – wanting it now, wanting more, wanting a snack… Sometimes I want her to scratch my head or my back. Sometimes I tell her to pick me up and turn me upside down, like when I was a baby, but I also tell her that I hate when she does that, until she cuddles me really close and I close my eyes and remember. Yup! My human understands me. – Noel, the Christmas Cat (aka Queen of the DogDaz Zoo)

Monday Mischief: 10 Tips for Walking Dogs In Extreme Heat
The incredible heat wave that is blanketing the United States continues. It is impossible to be outside for very long. Louise doesn’t care how hot it is, she still wants to go for her twice daily walks.
Here are my tips for taking your dog out in extreme heat:

Walk early or late. Before the heat builds up.

Know your dog, especially if they have those cute smushy flat faces, like pugs. Breathing can be hard on them in the heat. Heavy set dogs like Sofie with her massive coat of fur, should be outside for only short periods (20 minutes maximum).

Dogs don’t sweat. Make sure to keep them hydrated. Check their gums and skin for signs of dehydration.

Dogs cool from their paws and belly. Don’t waste water on the top of them.

Jump from one shady spot to the next trying to avoid as much sunny street as possible. If you can’t go from shade to shade then try to walk on dirt or grass or at least move quickly.

The dog understands that it is hot and will be fine with a shorter than normal stroll. (Or so I try to convince Louise.)

Do regular paw checks. Hot paws are bad. Cool paws are good. Water down the paws immediately if hot. Touch your dogs paws at home to get a sense of what they feel like temperature wise when normal.

We tend to take sit breaks in the shade, on the grass or dirt if we can. Sofie likes to dig down to the cool stuff. As long as it is not in someone’s yard, I let her dig away.

Room temperature water is much better to bring than ICE. On a hot day, ice is toooo cold and could have a negative effect. Use your water bottle to cool paws and drink.

Stay close to home. This way if you see the furry struggling, you can get home lickety split (aka – fast).
Sofie wants to plant herself next to the sunflowers and not move. Sounds like a plan to me!

Caturday: Keeping Cool
It is 105 F degrees today (41 C).
Nine doesn’t understand that he would hate it outside.
So, he is giving me that look.
You know the one.
The look that says, “how come you and the dogs can go outside but we cats have to stay indoors all the time.”
I hate when they give me ‘that look.’
Sorry lil’ boy, it is for your own good.
I cannot imagine a life without cats!

Wordless Wednesday: Splish Splash
Dog-gone it’s hot! These must be the DOGDAZ (dayz) of summer.
We have so much fun swimming with Mojo and Zelda in their dog pool.
Those Labradors love to swim.
Lulu will not get in the water, no matter how hot it is. Maybe it is because she is more of a Hound dog than a Lab. Who knows? She hates to get wet.
Sofie love love loves to get down and splashy. It takes 3 days for her Sheltie coat to dry but she doesn’t care. BarkOutLoud!
